I want to apologize for the lack of updating for awhile. When I first got this blog, I was all about it, and updated pretty often, but I got slack on it, busy with my life, and this poor thing felt the blunt of the hit. I would like to inform you on some choice things that have been going on in my life right now.
My major is Extension Education - Communication Concentration, which pretty much equals out to Agriculture & Communication put together. Pretty lame? Yeah it is. Nothing is pretty about it, nor do I really have an interest for anything in this field, minus the communication part. I was struggling in school, knew that NC State was the place for me to go, but I didn't have the grades at the time, so I got accepted into a college that would accept me with my grades. Now my grades are a lot higher, but I'm stuck in a major that I'm really far long into. But let's face it: it doesn't matter what your degree is in these days, they just want to see that paper! But to my story...
So, one of the required courses is Poultry Science. Every single bit of this class has been exactly what I was haunting. Learning too much about chicken, that now when I go to Bojangles, I know exactly what I'm eating, how it got processed, the part of the chicken it's from, and much more that I wish to exclude from my memory soon. I won't lie though, it's been somewhat interesting finding out random crap about chickens. Well, a lab is connected with this class - and the first 2 labs included dissecting which disgusted me to no belief. Most of the jigs in that class are rednecks with Carhartt jackets, camo hats and wrangler jeans, and here I am sitting with my fake Coach purse. Can you get this picture yet?
First haunting was the 2nd lab, when we were going through the digestive system, a guy named Chance (go figure) was sitting across from me, and decided to cut off his chickens toe which obviously has bone in it. He then put force towards his scissors, which made this poor chickens toe fly across the table, and hit me on my shoulder. This made me start to hate this class.
Second disgust is when my lab professor would demonstrate what we needed to do to the chicken, and cut the thing open, blood was everywhere, and she didnt use gloves OR even take off her wedding rings! She said she has done it so long that she can do it with her eyes closed and doesn't like the "sensation" of the gloves and would rather do it bare handed. I personally think that's some sort of hazard, but whatever.
Finally, our last big field trip (out of 5) was to the Butterball factory in Mount Olive, NC. I've been dreading this field trip because its with 50+ State kids, who are weird and no one knows eachother, for over 2 hours in a bus there and back. We get there, and have to wear a head to toe white jump-suit, that covered our feet and had a hood. Then we had to wear goggles, ear plugs, hair nets, AND a hard hat. A little obsessive I think. Whatever. They showed us everything in small groups of 6 per group. My lab teach warned me earlier that we would be "dripped" on during our tour, with water/blood depending on where we were. This was my worst nightmare. In any given section of this factory, there'd be 20+ hispanic workers either yanking heads off, skinning, taking gizzards out, cutting off breasts, etc. Chickens hung from hooks on a conveyer belt around the entire place, sort of like this:

To put it bluntly, I was grossed out to the max, and I'm so glad that this class is finally coming to a close!
woof.
